University of Glasgow Wedding – Joe and Amy

This University of Glasgow Wedding with Joe and Amy was such a showstopper from start to finish! The day kicked off with Joe and his groomsmen getting ready. The best men were kitted out with fetching kilts and traditional Scottish regalia, including a little dagger (which I found out is called a sgian-dubh) stowed away in their socks. After some trouble attaching the flowers, it was time for the kilt inspection from Amy’s aunt. After a few minor adjustments, they were ready to go.

Meanwhile, just around the corner, Amy and her bridesmaids were getting their hair done. Amy was very relaxed and the girls enjoyed themselves with a with a well-earned glass of Prosecco, which took a few attempts to pop open. A lovely moment was when Amy and her bridesmaids huddled around the mirror to see her get ready for her wedding, with her mum watching on with a tear in her eye.

Joe and Amy got married in Hogwarts. Well, just about as close to Hogwarts as you can get. For the architecture buffs, The University of Glasgow Chapel is one of the finest examples of Gothic Revival design, and was built to commemorate the lives lost in the first and second world wars. It is also happens to be a fantastic place to commemorate a wedding.

Amy was walked down the isle to the sweet sounds of the gospel choir Soul Nation, and after the ceremony and group shots, the wedding congregation were escorted to the cloisters, which had the most beautiful light and shadow to take pictures in. Soul Nation continued singing to everyone while they were offered drinks and mini cheddar canapés.

It wouldn’t be a Scottish wedding without some bagpipes, and Joe and Amy didn’t disappoint. Their bagpipe player (who also happened to address the haggis; clearly a multitalented man!) led a procession of guests down the road to the Cottiers theatre, the reception venue. It was beautifully decked out with the most incredible flower arrangements, and fairy lights hung over the tables from the balcony level. Cottiers was originally a church, which means it has a great layout for a wedding party. Once the excellent food and speeches were over, the venue was transformed into a huge dance floor, perfect for the oncoming ceilidh. The guests properly went for it, and as a result, it made our jobs as photographers easy with some fancy (and hilarious) dance routines.

After the ceilidh, it was time for a disco, with Joe’s carefully curated playlist going down a treat. You could really feel the love in there, and by the time it was over no one wanted to go home. Joe and Amy, thank you for asking us to photograph your Glaswegian wedding, it was a blast!

Daytripping to Suffolk Southwold

A couple of weekends ago, we decided to go on a day  trip to Southwold. I used to go regularly as a child, and have fond memories of going on bike rides to the beach and playing in the arcade. Coming back after over 10 years absence, it was interesting to see how much the place has changed. It has definitely become much more popular, being a weekend jaunt for moneyed Londoners, possibly with similar childhood memories of the place.

The pier has witnessed the biggest change. When I used to go there, the place was dilapidated, and I remember being the only kid there pouring my pocket money away into the arcade machines. These days, there are lots of different amusements along the pier, and the fish and chip shop was rammed with customers. Admittedly this was on a Saturday in the middle of August, but it really has improved, otherwise people wouldn’t be voluntarily spending time there!

The high street remains largely the same, although there are more coffee shops and clothing stores. The brewery is still going strong, and it was nice to visit the harbour in Walberswick. The whole area is worthy of a longer stay; it is easy see why we went there so frequently when we were young.
